Life in the Ring

In Solution 9, the lifespan of its residents depends on a valuable resource; The souls of the departed, consumed by their personal ‘regulator’ whenever they meet an early demise. As one of many struggling arena battlers, Troy pays for his livelihood by means that expose him to even higher soul consumption, often overclocking his gadget.

He’s cocky to a fault, and despite putting up a good fight, he’s no stranger to defeat. His trusty regulator would raise him from the brink of death, again, and again, and again.

Yet, Troy is softer than he looks, under the rough exterior and daredevil attitude is a soft heart. He’s always out to help those around him, hoping to shape a better world; Idealistic aspirations he picked up from playing too many fantasy games.

Still, deeper hides a lingering sorrow, of loved ones he can’t recall.

A Little Friend

For as long as he can remember -which isn’t much- Troy’s been accompanied by a tiny living(?) cube. He’s got no clue of its origin.

Troy sees it as a pet; The geometric minion speaks in a language indecipherable to him -or anyone else- yet they seem to ‘understand’ each other. “Qube” follows him everywhere, and occasionally helps with minor chores, like tidying his place and preparing his morning coffee.

Curiously, in rare instances, Qube will run off on his own. Troy gets lured to a peculiar place whenever it happens, and it triggers a forgotten memory.

A moment he shared with someone… But who?

On a fated evening -after getting scolded for not checking his inbox- Troy finds atop a list of thousands of unread emails, an “Exclusive job offer”. In it, an anonymous contractor requests him as a “handyman of sorts”, tasked with daily third-party requests.

It was the fattest paycheck he’d ever been offered, and that wasn’t even the sweetest part of the deal! Working for this stranger, Troy could travel beyond the suffocating electrope walls of the city.
He accepted without hesitation.

After years working for ‘The Boss’, Troy acquires an impressive repertoire of skills. He mastered combat, crafting, and harvesting! He also dabbles in several unexpected fields of work, from stage performance to farming in space!

Some of these gigs he’d rather keep private… Like when he worked as a “Muse’” for a "Prolific Painter” in Eulmore, or that time he had to synthesize a batch of dubious potions that -if found by authorities- could get his crafter license revoked.

But he’ll gloat for hours about “the one time he got paid to pilot a giant robot”. Saying “Troy likes machines“ would be an understatement. He’s a total nerd when it comes to mech tech.
